Mx. DiDi Delgado

DiDi Delgado is an award-winning poet, Black liberation organizer, freelance journalist and activist. Born in Boston, Massachusetts, Delgado co-founded Black Lives Matter Cambridge in 2015 and later founded a reparations and anti-racism platform, Done For DiDi- providing education to “allies” and direct cash assistance to Black women and non-men. Using art and advocacy, DiDi aims to bridge the gaps between the margins--all while practicing radical philanthropy through direct giving.

 

Dr. Shamell Bell

Dr. Shamell Bell is a homeschooling mother, community organizer, and innovative educator with an unyielding dedication to social justice. As the 2023-2024 bell hooks Center Resident Teacher Scholar at Berea College, she brings her dynamic expertise to the forefront of education. Dr. Bell, a Full-Time Lecturer of Somatic Practices and Global Performance at Harvard University, has also impacted Dartmouth College and various California State University campuses, enriching the academic landscape.

 
 

Course Structure:

This independent study is structured around a combination of readings, discussions, research projects, and individual reflections. Students will explore relevant literature, engage in discussions facilitated by Mx. Didi Delgado and Dr. Shamell Bell, and complete assignments designed to deepen their understanding of the topics covered. Additionally, students will have the opportunity to collaborate on projects aimed at promoting awareness and understanding in their own communities.

Readings:

You’ll immerse in thought-provoking central readings, "Freedom Dreams" by Robin DG Kelley and Achille Mbembe’s “Necropolitics” (2011), that aim to nurture a critical understanding of the societal structures we aim to challenge.

Assessment:

Assessment in this independent study will be based on participation in discussions, regular reflections, research projects, and a final project that demonstrates a thorough understanding of the course materials and their application to real-world situations.

Prerequisites:

There are no formal prerequisites for this course, but a genuine commitment to dismantling racism and promoting intersectional feminism is essential. Participants should come to the course with an open mind, a willingness to engage in self-reflection, and a desire to actively work towards social justice and equity.
